The U.S. Factor

The United States has long supported Israel both in policy and foreign aid. Such support is often met with either strong condemnation or stanch approval.

In your opinion should the U.S. continue to send "aid" to Israel, do the befefits of our realationship with Israel outweight the costs? Explain your reasoning.

  1. I think we should continue to support Israel because the benefits of aiding Israel outweigh the costs. Supporting Israel gives us a strategic location in the Middle East and they also have support democracy and western values. On the other hand, we should also give aid to more countries in the Middle East. So the United States isn't completely despised by everyone except for Israel.

  2. i think we should continue to send support because it bonds us with some of the best spies in the world, and it offers more protection from our enemies over in the middle east.

  3. I think we should continue aiding Israel. We are too far invested in Israel to simply back out now. If we suddenely stopped aiding Israel it would be to big a risk to chance becoming enemies with such a dangerous army and to lose such a big ally as Israel.

  4. I think that we should continue to send aid to Israel. Israel shares values and beliefs with the United States. Supporting Israel also gives us a strong ally in an unstable region. Even though supporting Israel is expensive we benefit from having intel in a region that has threatened our national security in the past.

  5. I think that the U.S. should continue to send aid to Israel, but I don't think that we should send as much as we do. I feel that sometimes foreign involvement heightens tensions instead of releives them. America's undying support for Israel has made other Middle Eastern nations dislike us. I think that we should continue to support Western values in Israel but we should also help provide opportunities and aid to Palestinians so that they don't feel as if they're only choice is to join terrorist groups.

  6. I feel that however Israel acts reflects upon us, either positively or negatively. By sending aid to Israel, we essentially endorse whatever they do. I do think it is important to have at least one staunch supporter in the middle east, but the cost of the additional enmity of Israel's enemies may hurt us in the long run.

  7. I don't think the US should support Israel as completely as they do. To say we will always give Israel a qualatative military edge is a really huge commitment. I don't understand how that ever passed because it seems like something that is too big of a commitment to promise too. I don't really understand why we support Israel so wholeheartedly. It seems like the major reason is that they are strategically located. That doesn't seem like a big enough benefit to justify sending a thrid of the aid budget to them. Also it seems like the longer both sides have resources to fight, the longer they are going to fight.

  8. I think that we should continue to aid Israel but we should cut it back a little. The fact that all of our aid goes towards military is not ok. We could use that money towards our own economy instead of just buying military tools for another country. While it does help having an ally there we should not send as much money there as we do. We could still send money but scale it back until Israel comes and says for sure that they will need more money to keep their military at level that they are at.

  9. I think that it is good to send them aid and support them because they are a good ally to have. However, I dont think that we should be giving them as much aid as we are. Our country does not have enough money to be sending them as much as we do. If we stop giving Israel aid that we will regret it because we could lose them as an ally.

  10. I believe that we continue with aid to Israel. If we abandon Israel then we are leaving them to a sea of hostile neighbors. Especially after the Arab spring, which had so much potential, more and more countries are falling victim to radicals seizing power in government positions. Egypt, Tunisia, and Lybia now all have governments that at least sympathize with radical groups that want to destroy Israel. If we abandon Israel we are abandoning one of the only nations that we can identify philosophically (republicanism, democracy, etc) that exists in the Middle East. Not only that, but we would lose an ally that we can use to combat terrorists. We need to stick by those who we agree with; yes, Israel makes mistakes, but we still need to stick by them because that's what true friendship, partnership, or allies do.

  11. Supporting Isael has its advantages and disadvantages. I believe that we need to continue sending aid to Irael, but not in the ammounts we are now. The cost is great, maybe too great for what the United States can afford. With supporting Israel, the United States has put itself in the line of fire. We have both our enemies and Israel's enemies to worry about. I believe that the amount of money we send to Israel's military is outrageous. The billions of dollars we give Israel for military reasons could be cut back and given to countries who need need the money for their necessities. However, I also believe that we need to keep helping them defend themselves. Israel is our friend and they deserve our help. But the help we give to them could go to help others.

  12. Part of me says that we should continue to aid Israel because we have been for so long that it would only cause them turmoil; however, I feel that it is necessary for Israel to support itself in order to become a stronger nation. I think that we should stop supporting Israel for this reason, but I think that we should do it gradually. I do think that the benefits of us supporting Israel outweigh the costs, but that doesn't mean those benefits can't be reaped through different avenues. It is really important in my opinion, however, that no matter what, it is stressed that negotiation is the only option, the way that it is now.

  13. I think we should continue to send aid to Israel because we need to have a strong ally in the Middle East, since we already have countries against us in the MIddle East. We've been loyal to them for so long, that we should continue supporting them.

  14. I think we should continue to send aid to Israel because even though is cost but we could cut back a little. They are also a good ally and spies for us in the Middle East. We have been supporting them for so long I don't see why we should stop supporting now.

  15. I think that as long as the US sends Israel billions of dollars for their military. We say that we want the two nations to have peace but we still send all this military support. I believe the US should back off a little but because as long as we hang out presence over Israel, they will never feel vulnerable enough to make peace with Palestine. When the US decides to back off and Israel is a little scared then maybe they will reach a reasonable agreement. This feud has gone on long enough. I know that both nations don't really want to fight, they just want their home but wither side is to proud to reason with the other. I don't believe Israel and the US handled it properly. They just kicked out Palestine and threw them in camps. On the other hand Palestine isn't balding their situation very well, I mean suicide bombers?! That's just so dumb and will get you nowhere. There are only two really options for either side. Make peace or die. There is no room for grey area. That had there chance to Ty and reason with each other but now it's gone. To far. Now that the US is involved, it's way more complicated then it should be because now all of the US's enemies will side with Palestine and soon it will turn into WWIII. I really hope that they will be able to reach a peace agreement. Both are so interesting and neither on should have to be displaced because the other wants the land. But I don't think I'll be alive to see peace. They will reach it, I know. Kane not today, maybe not tomorrow, but I believe that the good of man will overcome and they will come together and make an agreement. That will work only of other powers just back off and let them figure out there problems.

  16. I believe that by providing so much aid to Israel, the US is not allowing Israel to achieve real independence. If Israel is to survive in the Middle East for any long period of time they will need to make their own name apart from the United States. However, the U.S. does not contemplate long-term effects of our relationship other than the say-so obtained by helping to Westernize the Middle East and our resulting influence over Middle Eastern countries. Politicians fail to consider larger issues of our country's debt and unhealthy intrusion into foreign politics in the name of masked imperialism. The U.S. has its own selfish goals for its relationship with Iran that only create greater havoc for Middle Eastern countries.
